Did you know that in California a simple blood test can cost anywhere between $10 to $10,000?
Not a typo.
$10 to $10,000.
A recent study in the British Medical Journal looked at 100 different hospitals comparing the prices of several common procedures and tests. In general the range consisted of these wild gaps in price for basically the same treatment or test.
Now this study just looked at California hospitals. You might be saying, “Oh I’m sure it’s not like this in the rest of the country.” I would not hold your breath.
The issue seems to be that each facility can set whatever price they want for a particular procedure. However since these facilities do not list their prices, it may be a challenge to know the actual costs of your care.
If you have insurance, then these costs are likely covered. If you don’t have insurance, or if your insurance only covers a certain amount, then this outlandish pricing practice could bankrupt you. Especially when you look at the cost of a procedure like an appendectomy, which the study found could cost $1,529 to $186,955.
Again, not a typo.
The thought of all of this gives us pause. With a system so out of balance, will it ever level out? Hopefully more studies like this help the overall fight. Also we encourage you to ask questions about the costs of your healthcare. Even if you have full coverage, you can usually see what items cost. Just because it’s covered does not mean being happy with the outlandish cost.
