Part 8 of 10 - How Integrative Medical Doctors Reverse Autoimmune Disease – #2
Hey there! If you or a loved one just found out you have an autoimmune disease, it is completely normal to feel a little scared. But here is the good news: your body is incredibly smart, and you absolutely can get better! Your symptoms can lessen, and yes, healing is totally possible.
Think of your immune system as your body's personal superhero team. Usually, it protects you from bad guys like germs and tumors. But in an autoimmune disease, the superheroes get a little confused and start attacking your body's own healthy parts instead. Over 50 million Americans are dealing with this right now—including people with conditions like lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and type 1 diabetes.
Old-school medicine usually tries to fix this by giving you heavy medications that turn off your superhero team (your immune system). But that leaves you unprotected and causes some tricky side effects. Integrative Medical Doctors take a much cooler approach. Instead of just throwing a blanket over your immune system, they act like detectives to figure out why the superheroes got confused in the first place, helping to fix the actual root cause of the problem.
In our office we have helped people get their energy back, lower their inflammation, and even see their diseases disappear completely!
What Are Autoimmune Diseases?
There are over 100 different autoimmune conditions. Some attack the joints (like rheumatoid arthritis), some attack the neck (like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis), and others affect the skin or stomach. Even though they have different names, they all share the same basic problem: the immune system is confused, which causes swelling and irritation inside the body.
Lately, these diseases have been popping up much faster than they used to. Because our human genes don't change that quickly, scientists know this increase is actually caused by damage from things in our environment and our lifestyle (how we choose to live).
Everything in your body is connected. Autoimmune diseases like to play a game of hide-and-seek—sometimes you feel great (remission), and sometimes you feel lousy (a flare-up). By figuring out the triggers that have led to the development of an autoimmune disease, we can help you have more good days, and fewer flare-ups.
What Causes the Confusion?
It usually takes two things to spark an autoimmune issue: the genes you were born with, and a "trigger" from the outside world. We know this because even if identical twins share the exact same DNA, if one gets sick, the other one usually doesn't!
So, what are these outside triggers? They can be:
- Old viruses or infections (like the Epstein-Barr virus).
- Harsh chemicals, toxins, or heavy metals.
- Certain medications or foods.
A lot of the action happens in your belly! About 70% to 80% of your immune system lives right in your gut. If your gut lining gets irritated and develops tiny holes—a condition called "leaky gut"—undigested food and toxins can slip into your bloodstream. Your immune system sees these intruders, sounds the alarm, and accidentally starts attacking your own tissues. By fixing the gut, Integrative Medical Doctors can actually help reverse the disease.
Calming the Storm (Reducing Inflammation)
Imagine inflammation as a fire inside your body. It causes tissue damage and makes you feel lousy. Instead of just dumping medication on the smoke, Dr. Harper uses special tests to find the fire's source.
By healing your leaky gut with good nutrition and gently cleaning environmental toxins out of your body, you can put the fire out right at the root. When the inflammation goes away, your body finally gets the chance to heal itself.
A Cool Tool: Low-Dose Naltrexone (LDN)
One of the most exciting tools used by Integrative Medical Doctors is a medicine called Low-Dose Naltrexone (LDN). When taken in tiny amounts, it acts like a gentle coach for your immune system.
Instead of turning your immune system completely off like traditional medications do, LDN helps it balance itself out. It boosts your body's natural "feel-good" chemicals (endorphins) and lowers the irritation. Patients using LDN often report less pain, way more energy, clearer thinking, and better lab numbers within just a few weeks or months!
Eating Good Food and Smart Supplements
What you put on your plate matters a lot! Special eating plans can act like medicine by removing foods that upset your immune system and adding foods and supplements that heal it.
Happy Habits: Stress, Sleep, and Movement
Did you know feeling super stressed out can actually trigger a physical flare-up? It’s true! Stress sends signals that upset your gut and confuse your immune system. We teach you effective, easy ways to calm your nerves.
Sleep is your body's natural nighttime repair crew. If you don't sleep well, your inflammation goes up. By fixing your sleep habits, you break that destructive cycle.
Moving your body is also great, but you don't need to run a marathon! Gentle movement like walking or stretching pumps your blood and lymph and lowers stress without wearing you out.
Dusting Out the Toxins
We live in a world full of modern plastics, chemicals, and pollution. Sometimes these things get trapped in our bodies and trick our immune systems.
You need to remove your intake of additional toxins, and begin a program to help your body purge the toxins that are trapped in it. We have great ways to help you with this.
Your body wants to be healthy, and with the right guide, you can help it find its way back to balance!
